NOT SPORTING!

How haunted the careless hunter must be
Under guilt spread out for eternity.
No escape after the end of his breaths,
Tallying souls, the collector of deaths.
Innocence lost. Innocent life was killed.
No love found, but violence was thrilled.
God made all beasts, let God be the jury
In what beast heart, peace..What beast heart, fury.
Stalking animal kin with cruel intent,
Chasing trembling legs 'till they are spent,
Rush blood through veins, terrorizing the meek,
Unfair to bait, trap, the unarmed can't speak.
Enlighten the dark mind that holds the gun.
Live and let live, for to God we're all one.

Ah!

Sole lord of the wilderness spread around,
viewed from his belvedere upon the hill,
predators or prey everywhere found,
swift footed deer and leopards poised to kill.

Herds of impala alert and watchful,
ready to flee at danger's slightest hint,
sniffing the air are edgily careful,
across well worn paths then suddenly sprint.

As the sun sails close to horizon's brink,
the waterhole comes alive with wildlife,
creatures big and small amicably drink,
peacefully sharing, without any strife.

now scarred and ruined stands this once blessed land,
its fate's been destroyed by a tyrant's hand.

Life in the Bush

As night begins to end at dawn
Nocturnal life scampers away
The earth stretches its arms and yawns
and gets ready for another day

On grass and leaves the sparkling dew
Shines brilliantly ere it parts
Advances the time to bid adieu
When with sunrise bright day will start

Birds serenade the blushing sky
Sing to the glory of the sun
Their sweet notes of praise rising high
Ecstatic that the day's begun

The bush is alive, beasts awake
Birds, feathers aflutter fly high
All head to waterhole or lake
As the sun travels in the sky

Glossy starlings closely huddle
Their blue green wings shine dazzlingly
happily splash in a puddle
drinking together merrily

A fork tailed drongo likes to stay
In a lonely Morning Glory
A grey lowrie calls 'go away'
High up from a Syringa tree

Above the road on a wire high
A lilac breasted roller swings
Marshall Eagles take to the sky
Gliding with their enormous wings

Secretary birds look displeased
An expression they practice well
And guinea fowls are ill at ease
Some danger in the air they smell

A blue heron stands immobile
While crowned cranes dance amorously
Hornbills amble in their own style
And an ostrich runs awkwardly

Candelabra raises its arms
Perhaps to God it quietly prays
Asking to keep all life from harm
A prayer it repeats each day

Silent witness through centuries
The gigantic Baobab stands
Caressed and soothed by the breeze
gently smiles at this ancient land

The broad armed acacia sways
As elephants rip off its bark
Some trees they will viciously slay
Leaving others quite bare and stark

The giraffes munch leaves off the trees
Kudu, Zebras and Sable feed
Wildebeest herd eat all they please
Nature's provided for all needs

The bush seems serene and peaceful
Tranquility hangs in the air
The lion lazes, his stomach's full
The leopard's resting in his lair

But in a moment tides may turn
Scents of danger may float on air
Lessons in caution they all learn
Sometimes escaping by a hair

Predators are not their worst foe
For they kill only as they need
Hunters with their guns are the woe
Killing for pleasure and for greed

A stately bushbuck on a stroll
Saunters beside his pretty hind
Stops to drink at a waterhole
Unaware death waits in a blind.

Survival

Nesting in the scrub desert
struggling so hard to survive
recklessly driven four wheel drives
callously destroy precious lives

Our Vanishing Friends.......

Can't imagine what that trinket you are wearing
might have cost.
Do you realise, to own it, that a noble
life was lost?
D'you condone disgraceful plunder of the Most
Magnificent One
And the most unique of God's creatures that
walk beneath His sun?

Was it really worth the price you paid to
finance such a sin?
What did jumbo ever do to you that want
to kill his kin?
Leave his carcass to hyaenas while his ivory
tusks are poached?
Don't you realise humane and legal rules
are thereby broached?

Let their ivory rest in Africa.
Don't take any away
For the cost is far too high and we must
just refuse to pay.
As the rhino once was hunted for it's
'aphrodisiac' horn,
It is now a sad fact that their population's
nearly gone.

While friends may admire your trinket that you
wear with such aplomb,
I can't help but think of all the slaughter,
adding to the sum
Of Man's callous inhumanity, that's
so directly linked
To demise of all the species that have
now become extinct.
